A cabin out in the woods.

No, this is not a setup for a meta-horror flick. I actually want a cabin of my own out in the woods. Preferably with a reasonably fast internet connection so that I can work remotely. And preferably at least a couple of hours drive away from the nearest town.

Why do I want an abode out in the wilderness? It’s not that I’m a recluse who abhors all human contact. I love the hustle-and-bustle of a big city about as much as the next guy. I just.. I like wide open spaces. And as much as I am continually chilled at the sight of a skyscraper towering above me, I am even more awed when the thing towering over me is a formidable mountain-face. And I like standing in an open patch of ground and seeing nothing but the open ground on all sides. At the same time, I’m not really a tree-hugger either, so it’s not like I want to be surrounded by trees in a landscape unblemished by technology. I tend to prefer wide open spaces with some touches here and there of human civilization, like power lines or train tracks. Perhaps that makes sense on some level. After all, something that hasn’t been trod upon by humans will no doubt be claimed by men sooner or later. On the other hand, a place that used to have frequent human contact but has since been abandoned probably has a higher likelihood of not seeing human meddling in the future. And there’s no better sign on abandonment than dilapidated structures overrun with creepers and railway tracks fallen into a bad state of disrepair.

So that’s the first thing on my wishlist. A cabin, out in the woods, maybe with a quiet stream bubbling merrily nearby.

Something like this:
